Building A Strong, Resilient Future for our region

Local Federal and State members the Hon Bob Katter MP and Robbie Katter MP joined the NWQROC meeting in Mount Isa.

Cr Barry Hughes - NWQROC Chair

As the dust settles on the recent federal election, in the North West we continue to turn our attention to the job at hand - building a strong, resilient future for our region - with our recent board meeting held in Mount Isa on the 7-8 May.

On behalf of the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC), I extend my congratulations to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his government on their re-election. We’re ready to continue working constructively with the government and delivering critical programs and investments for regional Australia.

In our part of the world, targeted place-based programs and investment continue to prove their value. Programs such as the Growing Regions Fund and the Regional Connectivity Program are helping to lay the groundwork for stronger, more connected communities across the North West. Disaster Recovery Funding focusing on local and regional priorities is helping to shape resilient and strong people, industry and infrastructure. These investments are not just welcome - they’re essential.

But there’s still more to do. NWQROC will continue to advocate strongly for increased federal investment in core areas that underpin our region’s growth and stability – from enabling infrastructure and connectivity, to health and housing.

These projects aren’t just good for the North West; they benefit the national economy. With the right support, we can unlock further potential in mining, agriculture, and tourism - sectors that already drive billions in economic value each year.

Congratulations also go to Bob Katter on his re-election as Member for Kennedy. Bob is a passionate advocate for regional Queensland, and we look forward to working together to ensure our priorities remain front and centre in Canberra. Local representation matters, and we’ll be working across all levels of government to ensure the best outcomes for our communities.

I’d also like to congratulate Senator Susan McDonald on her re-election. Senator McDonald has been a regular face at our Board meetings keeping us connected to ‘halls of power’ and is a strong advocate for North West Queensland and the broader northern Australia region. Her deep understanding of the issues we face, from infrastructure to liveability to disaster recovery, has made her an invaluable voice in Canberra. We look forward to continuing our close collaboration to keep the North West and all of northern Australia firmly on the national agenda.

As we move forward from the election and into the dry season, it’s also time to celebrate one of the most rewarding aspects of life in the North West - our tourism and events season. This is when our region really comes alive, with travellers hitting the road and locals taking the chance to explore more of their own backyard.

From the sweeping savannahs of the Gulf to spectacular escarpments and ancient gorges, there is no shortage of natural beauty and cultural heritage to experience. Events like the Mount Isa Rodeo, Karumba Outback by the Sea Festival, Julia Creek Dirt n Dust Festival, Hughenden Festival of Outback Skies and the many country shows, campdrafts and race meets across our towns showcase the heart of the North West Queensland outback.

Tourism is more than just a weekend getaway - it’s a vital part of our economy, especially for small businesses, community groups, and local councils. Every coffee bought, every bed booked, and every ticket sold supports the ongoing vibrancy of our towns.

So I encourage everyone - whether you’re a seasoned local or a first-time visitor - to get out, look around, and enjoy what the region has to offer.

There’s plenty of work ahead to strengthen our region, but there’s also plenty to be proud of. North West Queensland has always been defined by its resilience, its enterprise, and its people. With continued investment, strategic planning, and a shared determination to keep pushing forward, I have no doubt we’ll make the most of what’s to come.

Stay safe on the roads, enjoy the season, and here’s to a strong year ahead for the North West.
