NWQROC welcomes extension of NAIF to support regional growth
The North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC) has welcomed the Federal Government’s 10-year extension of the Northern Australia Infrastructure Facility (NAIF), highlighting the fund’s critical importance in supporting economic development, infrastructure investment and long-term resilience across North West Queensland.
NWQROC Chair, Etheridge Shire Mayor Barry Hughes, said the extension provides welcomed confidence for communities and industry at a time when long-term investment certainty is essential.
“This commitment from the Australian Government reinforces the importance of Northern Australia as a key contributor to the nation’s prosperity, and provides certainty for industry to plan for the future.”
“We’re yet to see the full potential of NAIF delivered in the North West. We know this fund can play a vital role in delivering the infrastructure that sustains our communities, drives productivity and underpins national economic growth.”
“This keeps an essential investment pathway open as we continue to advocate for strategic investment in the enabling infrastructure needed to sustain and grow our region and its $4.7 billion contribution to the national economy.”
Cloncurry Shire Mayor Greg Campbell said the announcement helps to boost the current momentum and build further confidence for industry expansion and long-term regional development.
“North West Queensland’s resources, agricultural and transport sectors rely on strategic infrastructure to remain competitive and productive.
“NAIF’s continued operation has the potential to unlock new projects and strengthen the foundations for long-term economic growth in our region. This is a positive step for our communities and the industries that drive them.”
Carpentaria Shire Mayor Jack Bawden said the NAIF had the potential to address the unique challenges and opportunities in the region particularly for its remote and First Nations communities.
“Our region faces vast distances, harsh conditions and growing demand for better connectivity. NAIF funding can play an instrumental part in addressing these challenges and supporting projects that might not otherwise progress.
“NAIF can make essential developments a reality - projects that support liveability, economic strength and long-term community sustainability.”
NWQROC acknowledges the Federal Government’s ongoing commitment to Northern Australia and looks forward to continued collaboration to deliver infrastructure that strengthens communities, supports industry and enhances liveability across the North West.
