Statement on Rex Airlines

Local leaders from across North West Queensland have welcomed the announcement that Air T Inc has signed a Sale and Implementation Deed to purchase Regional Express (REX) Airlines, marking a positive step toward enhanced certainty for regional air services.

NWQROC Chair, Cr Barry Hughes, said the group is cautiously optimistic about the acquisition and the opportunities it presents for REX to refocus on delivering reliable and consistent air passenger services throughout North West Queensland.

“Reliable air connectivity is essential to our communities. We rely on dependable air services for business, tourism, access to health and education, and overall liveability,” Cr Hughes said.

“Air passenger services are critical to our communities which includes some of the nation’s most remote and vulnerable. They play a direct role in supporting local businesses, attracting workforce and investment, and ensuring residents remain connected to the services they need.

We are ready to get behind this next chapter for REX, recognising the great opportunities that are available for its new owners to harness with continued improvement and investment in the regions.

“We acknowledge the support of the Albanese government and Infrastructure and Transport Minister Catherine King Catherine King in working towards a positive outcome for regional aviation during this administration process,” he said.

Mayor Hughes said NWQROC remained committed to advocating for sustainable and reliable air passenger services that keep the North West connected and competitive.

“The Australian Government’s announcement this week of a Productivity Commission inquiry into regional airfares is also welcome news. We are keen to contribute and ensure the voices of North West Queensland communities are heard to deliver the equitable services and prices we deserve.”

“NWQROC also looks forward to working with the Queensland Government through the review of Queensland’s Regulated Air Routes scheduled for early 2026,” he said.

“We will continue to advocate strongly to ensure our region receives its fair and equitable support similar to the benefits enjoyed by metro Queensland commuters through subsidised public transport.”

“Improved air services will help unlock economic growth, strengthen tourism, support workforce attraction, and create opportunities across current and emerging industries,” Cr Hughes said.
