North West ready to welcome back Queensland travellers
Camping out and catching a barra, digging for dinosaur bones, visiting relatives across the North West and more, are all back on the cards for Queenslanders with further relaxing of COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Mayors from the councils of North West Queensland have welcomed the latest announcement by the Premier, which has lifted restrictions on Queenslanders travelling within the state including overnight stays, from 1 June.
Key appointments for NWQ leaders - region in good hands
North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils board has re-elected Carpentaria Shire Mayor Jack Bawden as its Chair. Elected as Deputy Chair is Flinders Shire Mayor Jane McNamara.
Cr McNamara will also represent North West Queensland following her election as Local Government Association of Queensland (LGAQ) Policy Executive for 2020-2024.
Richmond Shire Mayor John Wharton AM, has been re-elected as the Chair of the North West Queensland Regional Roads and Transport Group.

Copperstring to power jobs and wealth creation in NQ

The Palaszczuk Government is fast tracking support for the massive CopperString 2.0 high voltage transmission line to provide cheaper power and turbo-charge investment across our world-class North West Minerals Province.
By extending the national electricity grid from Townsville across the North to Mount Isa, CopperString is expected to underpin the creation of thousands of minerals mining and industrial manufacturing jobs for generations to come and stimulate large-scale renewable energy investment.

As the Queensland Government has closed the western and southern state borders, the 21 councils of Western Queensland are stepping up to monitor and restrict access to their communities.
With the threat of Coronavirus (COVID-19) rising in Queensland, Western Queensland’s leaders have made the move to restrict travel not only to protect locals and essential service workers, but potential travellers as well.
Election needs to go ahead: NWQ leaders
With the Queensland local government election day only four days away, the organisation of the eight councils of North West Queensland has called for the current election to continue.
Executive Officer of the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC), Greg Hoffman PSM said: “As the world moves to respond to the COVID-19 pandemic, now more than ever we need certainty in our local communities and local government leaders empowered to make the decisions and provide the support their residents need.“
“NWQROC urges the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) to continue with the election – but it must ensure that the safety of its polling staff, electors and candidates is its top priority,” Mr Hoffman said.
Western Queensland mayors call for State government stimulus package
On the back of the Palaszczuk Government’s announcement today it would provide a $4 billion stimulus package for households and businesses, the leaders of Western Queensland have outlined a plan to keep their regions delivering for the nation as we unite to face down the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mayors from 21 councils are calling on the State Government to provide an economic stimulus package as soon as possible to ensure the region can continue delivering not just for its local communities, but state-wide – from agricultural products to other essential resources for households and industry.
Rex reaches agreement with Queensland Government

Regional Express (Rex) today announces that an agreement has been reached with the Queensland Government for the provision of a reduced schedule under a variation of the existing service contract that covers the Northern 1 & 2 routes, the Western 1 & 2 routes and the Gulf route. The reduced schedule will see all communities on these routes receive at least one return service a week.

Outback Queensland communities have united to lobby the Queensland Government for a single spending priority ahead of the 2020 State Budget - roads.
North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC), Remote Planning and Development Board (RAPAD) and South West Queensland Local Government Association (SWQLGA) acting as the Western Queensland Alliance of Councils is appealing to the State Government to increase investment in roads to provide the most beneficial and far reaching impact on the entire region.
Locals in the spotlight as North West Queensland councils Get Ready for the wet
Six councils from across North West Queensland have developed a new online resource, bringing together local experience and know-how to help locals and visitors prepare and respond during the wet season and beyond.
Carpentaria, Cloncurry, Doomadgee, Flinders, McKinlay and Richmond councils developed the platform www.getreadynwq.com.au, through the North West Queensland Regional Organisation of Councils (NWQROC), teaming up with local leaders, agencies, business and community to create the content.

$33M for North West Queensland economic transformation

The future prosperity of the North West Queensland economy has been further boosted today thanks to a $33.3 million investment by the Palaszczuk Government.
Minister for State Development Cameron Dick said the North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy Implementation Plan 2019–2021, developed in consultation with local stakeholders and the community, sets out actions to deliver 13 diversification initiatives.

NWQROC on the road to regional solutions
The North Queensland Livestock Industry Recovery Agency (NQLIRA) held a series of stakeholder events across Northern Queensland throughout August and September. The sessions look to inform the development of a strategy for the long-term recovery and resilience of areas affected by the 2019 monsoon trough.
